Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to study the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and phosphorus (P) fertilization on growth and yiwld of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). In a field experiment, plants were grown in dazomet-fumigated and unfumigated soil at five levels od added P (0, 20, 50, 150 and 300 kg P ha -1). During the vegetative phase, root length density, leaf suface and dry matter production were affected differently by fumigation under increasing P levels. However, at the final harvest there were no significant differences in gree pod yield between treatments. Differences observed in plant responses were due to phosphate fertilization rather than soil fumigation. Mycorrhizal infection by indigenous endophytes increased during the growing season in untreated soil and was significantly affected by addition of P fertilizer. Patterns of dry matter partitioning and root plasticity were studied in pot experiments. P fertilization incresed dry weight of root and shoot of the threebean genotypes tested. The most appreciable influence of P nutrition on plantgrowth was observed in leaf development. The distinct differences in root fraction observed in response to P fertilization seem to be relate to the efficiency of plants to divert their dry matter to the roots under conditions of P stress. |
